The Rising Youth (TRY) by Virlanie Retreat 2024: Sa Paglalakbay ‘Di Nag-iisa, Sa Paghilom May Karamay Ka

At Tala Camp and Eco-Retreat House, The Rising Youth (TRY) by Virlanie, a youth-led organization under the Independent Living Services of the foundation, recently organized a transformative retreat with the theme, “Sa Paglalakbay ‘Di Nag-iisa, Sa Paghilom May Karamay Ka” (In Your Journey, You Are Not Alone; In Healing, You Have Companion). The retreat brought together young people from Virlanie’s street-based program who registered and actively engaged during the sessions, creating a safe environment for learning, healing, and personal growth.

The retreat was meticulously designed to address the emotional and psychological needs of  participants, empowering them to manage their emotions effectively and pursue their aspirations, irrespective of their past experiences. This initiative aligns with the Virlanie Foundation’s commitment to supporting disadvantaged youth, ensuring they receive the interventions and support needed to navigate their life’s paths confidently.

Aside from The Rising Youth officers, the retreat was facilitated by invited resource speakers, namely Ms. Mia Martizano, MPsy. Cand., Virlanie’s Psychologist who shared her expertise on how people or things can influence an individual; and Mr. Mark Anthony Calubid, RSW, a former beneficiary under ILS, TRY Adviser, and an experienced Social Worker of the Philippine Red Cross, who discussed the topic of Self-Transformation and the importance of harmonious relationships and feedback. Their expertise was pivotal in crafting the retreat program, which was not only educational but also deeply therapeutic. Through lectures, group discussions, and activities, the facilitators addressed the complex layers of emotions that the youth experienced and provided practical strategies for emotional regulation and self-care.

Participants had an opportunity to disconnect from the distraction and noise from their daily lives, get focused, and relax at the moment. They also learned a variety of techniques to handle intense emotions, such as deep breathing, scanning, art activities, and reflection. These tools are essential for emotional self-regulation, helping individuals respond to their feelings in healthier ways. Moreover, the sessions emphasized the importance of acknowledging and processing past traumas but not allowing them to impede future ambitions.

One of the most significant aspects of the retreat was the encouragement to form bonds among participants. Sarah, one of TRY officers, affirmed that by sharing their stories and struggles, the youth realized they were not alone in their journeys. This sense of community is crucial for emotional support and was reinforced through team-building activities and shared responsibilities during the retreat.

Participants expressed renewed motivation and clearer visions for their futures. According to the TRY officers, the retreat not only provided them with emotional management skills but also instilled a sense of hope and camaraderie among them. They left with a network of peers and mentors to lean on, reaffirming the retreat’s theme: in every journey of healing and growth, they have companions.

The success of this retreat marks a significant milestone for The Rising Youth by Virlanie, demonstrating the profound impact of therapeutic community engagements in empowering at-risk youth. Thanks to the following people for making this retreat successful: EMpower for continuously believing and supporting the projects of The Rising Youth, Tala Camp and Eco-Retreat owned by Bahay Tuluyan Foundation Inc. for the warm accommodation and ensuring the safety of all young people and staff members; and the dedicated staff of the street-based program, Elizabeth Home and Resident Nurse, for their continued support and encouragement towards the young people.

The Virlanie Foundation remains dedicated to its mission of providing support and opportunities for these young individuals, ensuring they have the resources to transform their challenges into stepping stones for success. As they continue their journeys, they carry with them the assurance that they do not walk alone, and in the process of healing, they always have someone to accompany them.
