A Garden Blooms in Jade Home

Based in Dasmarinas, Cavite, Jade Home is one of Virlanie Foundation’s two homes for children with special needs. On top of their regular special education classes and daily activities, some young adults with higher functionality are involved in skills training to equip them with skills to carry them through daily living.

In 2014, COPION (Cooperation and Participation in Overseas NGOs) in Seoul, Korea funded a project called Capacity Building for Sheltered Employment for Young Adults with Special Needs through its Samsung-COPION Hope for Children Program (HFCP).

Through the grant, the garden and laundry projects were launched middle of 2014. Ten young adults are being trained in basic gardening—from preparing the soil to proper ways of planting, taking care of veggies like eggplants, tomatoes, mustard, pechay, baby carrots, baguio beans, string beans, capsicum, spinach, peppermint, and basil. Aside from supplying veggies and herbs to Jade Home’s own kitchen, the project also aims to provide fresh produce for selling within the local community.

The other part of the capability-building program involves the laundry workshop for fourteen young adults. The beneficiaries learned how to sort clothes, wash and dry them, fold, press, pack and weigh items before delivery. The objective was to eventually offer laundry services to members of the community and to prepare them for possible employment in the future.

Samsung-COPION HFCP’s valuable assistance empowers the children of Jade Home with skills and confidence to improve their own lives and positively affect the lives of the people around them. Telus Community Board also provided valuable assistance in turning this project into reality. And through the constant support of Virlanie Foundation, hope blooms in radiant colors both in the hearts of the children and the gardens of Jade Home.
