The Story of Virlanie Foundation’s Transformation (Part one of three)

After more than 20 years of giving back the smiles to street children, Virlanie Foundation, Inc. finds itself in a place where it needs to refocus its core mission in consideration of the public’s evolution and the Foundation’s own financial constraints.

To fulfill its two-pronged mission of taking “care of children in need of special protection towards independence-enabling,” and advocating and lobbying “for the rights of the child,” Virlanie concentrates its efforts now on helping the most vulnerable children, as well as those with special needs.

What we believe in

As a child-caring institution, Virlanie believes in helping children who are most vulnerable and to this end will be focusing its actual efforts on 0-12 year-old children, and those who have special needs.

At the same time the Foundation is maintaining 2 homes for young adults: Ella Yallah and Elizabeth Home (other homes for older beneficiaries including DIC are no longer operating). The support to this group will be pushed again once the other focused programs of the organization are strong enough and financially viable.Virlanie also believes that it is in the best interest of all children in need of special protection to be placed back into a family structure as soon as possible. Following this, we aim to have our children stay in Virlanie for a maximum of 3 to 5 years before being placed back into a family environment—through reunification, adoption, or foster care. For Virlanie, a family is not merely a structure but a stable environment wherein members understand and carry out their respective responsibilities to be able to give love and education to the children belonging in the family.
