EMpower Joins Meaningful Youth Engagement (MYE) in the Philippines

The Virlanie Foundation has been a vital partner of EMpower since 2017, collaborating on implementing youth-led initiatives in the Philippines.

On November 9, a significant step was taken toward amplifying the voices of young people in the Philippines as 14 Filipino Youth Representatives gathered for the first time under EMpower’s Meaningful Youth Engagement (MYE) initiative. This initial meeting laid the groundwork for an exciting and meaningful journey, which will include workshops and consultations to ensure that young voices shape programs addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable youth.

From November 27 to 29, EMpower will travel to the Philippines as guests for the project planning and design workshop with the 14 Filipino youth representatives. Five Indonesian Youth Fellows who participated in the FY23 MYE Youth Consultation in Indonesia will join the sessions. These fellows will bring valuable experiences and perspectives, fostering a rich exchange of cross-cultural ideas.

The MYE initiative in the Philippines is an enhanced iteration of the consultation held in Indonesia last year. Considering the unique context of the Philippines and the needs of partner organizations, this iteration aims to foster a more localized approach. The 14 youth representatives come from two of EMpower’s partner organizations in the Philippines: the Bahay Tuluyan Foundation and the Virlanie Foundation, Inc. This group will work collaboratively to provide meaningful feedback on the challenges and opportunities faced by vulnerable youth.

The project’s first phase focuses on planning and design, with several foundational activities already completed. These include:

A focus group discussion (FGD) to identify key issues,

Participant selection through self and peer nominations, panel interviews, and evaluations,

Project management meetings involving partner staff and EMpower representatives.

EMpower’s support extends through every phase of the MYE initiative, from planning to implementation and beyond. The insights gained from this consultation will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive regional strategy and guide local NGOs in addressing the economic and social challenges faced by young people.

The MYE initiative exemplifies EMpower’s commitment to listening to youth, empowering them to lead, and integrating their voices into programs that directly impact their lives. With the active involvement of young people, this initiative is set to create a more inclusive and impactful approach to supporting vulnerable youth in the Philippines and across the region.
