This November, Virlanie joins the Council for the Welfare of Children, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the National Youth Commission in celebrating the 26th National Children’s Month.
Spearheaded by Virlanie’s Education Pillar, a day-long National Children’s Month celebration was held last November 17, 2018 at the SiBuHi area. With the theme "Isulong: Tamang Pag-aaruga Para sa Lahat ng Bata! (Bring forward: Proper care for all children!)", fun and informative activities for children, young adults, and staff were prepared by Virlanie staff and the Rising Youth (Virlanie, young adult organization). Among the activities that took place were the opening parade, child rights-themed games, poster and slogan-making contests, and a "Panatang Makabata (Vow for the Children)" oath-taking ceremony.
According to Faidah Cayongcat, Virlanie’s Education Manager, the celebration aims to promote positive parenting and discipline. “The objective is to promote positive parenting and positive discipline in Virlanie. Tapos we aligned it to the national theme. Magkakaroon tayo ng Panatang Makabata which is tumutumbok talaga sa commitment of parents natin at adults in protecting the children. Mayroon din tayong commitment setting after ng Panatang Makabata. (The objective is to promote positive parenting and positive discipline in Virlanie. Then we aligned it to the national theme. We will have an oath-taking which will focus more on our parents’ and adults’ commitment in protecting children. We will also have a commitment setting after the oath-taking.”), said Faidah.
A day prior to the celebration, a focus group discussion (FGD) with the children as participants was held with the help of Virlanie’s psychologists. According to Faidah, the FGD focused on the children’s perceptions on what an ideal parent should be. “We asked the children to see their own perspective. Kasi mahirap na magbibigay ka ng parenting [training] pero hindi pala siya yung sa konsepto ng mga bata. (We asked the children first on what they think a parent should be based on their own perspective. It’s hard to provide parenting training when it does not align with the children’s concept of parenting).” “Magiging guide natin yun sa parenting principle at parenting style kasi mas maganda na coming from the children and from the youth. (This will serve as a guide for our parenting principle and parenting style since the answers came from the children and the youth themselves.)”, she added.
This is the first time Virlanie celebrated National Children’s Month.
