Towards independence: A story of a Virlanie child

The humility on his face is noticeable, striking but not overbearing. Dressed with positivity, he walks the room generously giving a smile to everyone who passes by. Paul (not his real name) is one of our young adults who lives in Ella Yallah, our home for boys ranging from 13 – 18 and is one of our beneficiaries under the Independent Living Program (ILP).

Last 14th of May, the Philippines celebrated Mother’s Day, and the 18th of June, it will be Father’s Day. In Virlanie, we are actually celebrating parenthood every single day through our residential program. But, what makes a parent? In Virlanie, we believe that biology is the least of what makes someone a parent.

Last May 16, along with the year-long “PhilFrance: Feel French!” celebration, the Embassy of France conducted the “She for She” Forum in Makati, Philippines. This forum aimed to highlight different initiatives of women supporting other women in various fields such as politics, civil society, academe and arts.

Children in their best attires, excitedly walked from their respective homes to Makati Coliseum on that eventful day of April 4. It was the event when Magellan Learning Center (MLC) students’ academic improvement was recognized. MLC is one of Virlanie’s support services that aim to answer the educational gaps of the children.

For a common observer, Juliet, 17, (name has been changed to protect identity) look like any other girls of her age. However, she had quite an extraordinary childhood—Juliet used to roam the streets of Metro Manila from a very young age. Her single mother was unemployed, so she was forced to work so she can buy food.

Young Adults benefit from skills training workshop

Rue Bourbon conducted a skills training workshop with 13 Virlanie young adults from February to March this year. The workshop consists of three focus areas, of which, Rue Bourbon staff are skilled of: baking, customer service and bartending.

From Streets to Stages

The month of May has been an exceptionally significant one for the children of Virlanie Foundation. For 25 days, Virlanie Voices formerly known as the Masaya Choir embarked on another exhilarating journey to Europe giving smiles to everyone around them! In a short span of time, the Choir gained an immense amount of extraordinary and life-changing experiences. Truly, it was indeed a memorable one.
